Calumet Land Conservation The Calumet region is a crescent-shaped region that encompasses the southeast side of Chicago, its adjacent southern suburbs, and the coastal counties of northwestern Indiana. It comprises one of the richest and most diverse natural landscapes in the United States and is home to several endangered species and thousands of acres of protected and as yet unprotected natural areas, including a national park. It is also home to heavy industry, which has left a legacy of landfills and abandoned industrial land. Today the foundation works with a broad array of partners in Indiana and Illinois that are working to preserve, restore and connect the Calumet region’s ecological treasures.
