Our mission and how we work

Areas of interest

The foundation funds efforts to promote healthy human communities and natural environments in the Chicago region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. It is particularly interested in collaborative projects focused on environment and conservation and on arts and culture.

Land conservation
The foundation supports:

  • Community agreement on land use and the management of growth.
  • Efforts to preserve natural lands permanently, particularly those strategic to watershed integrity.
  • Efforts to restore degraded natural lands.
  • Informed community debate on the above issues.

Artistic vitality
The foundation supports:

  • Innovative organizations or programs which cultivate community, do not have large bases of support, have potential for excellence and develop new talent. All artistic disciplines will be considered.
  • Programs that encourage public access to and cultivate sustained interest in significant cultural, historical, scientific and literary collections, especially libraries.

Special Projects
The foundation no longer accepts unsolicited proposals under Education and Community Welfare but continues to support special projects in these areas. These projects involve several organizations working together to develop and implement long-term strategies that integrate the foundation's other interest areas.
