The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation was established in 1952 during a meeting that took less than 20 minutes and resulted in four grants totaling $2,900. Since that small beginning the foundation has evolved into a complex institution with a 10-member board and an eight-person staff.
Despite growth, its values are still firmly grounded in the vision of its founders. While specific strategies have changed, the foundation’s core interests have never wavered: land conservation, because Gaylord and Dorothy and their descendents grew up close to the land; and artistic vitality, because Gaylord and Dorothy valued their own interaction with culture.
