About Us

The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation (initially the Gaylord Donnelley Foundation) was created in 1952 to further the wide-ranging philanthropic and civic interests of Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley. It is a private foundation. Gaylord Donnelley was a grandson of R.R. Donnelley, founder of the worldwide printing and communications services firm R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company. Gaylord served as the company's chairman for a time.

The foundation has always had a geographic focus on the Chicago Region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. In its early years, responding to the interests of the founding family, it supported a wide range of causes including conservation and wildlife, social welfare, education, art and cultural institutions, health care and animal welfare.

After the deaths of Gaylord Donnelley in 1992 and Dorothy Donnelley in 2002, the foundation's endowment grew significantly as it was a beneficiary of their estates. Beginning in 1992, the foundation's professional staff was expanded and investment managers were hired to implement a long-term philanthropic strategy developed by the board of directors. The foundation has current net assets of approximately $185 million.
